Programs

Foil Class

ICFC offers a variety of fencing programs including group and private instruction, training camps, seminars, and even birthday parties and corporate functions. Whether you just want to fence for fun or want to win a national championship, we have the program for you! Please visit our Youth and Adult programs pages for more detailed descriptions of our classes.

If you would like to schedule a private function such as a birthday party, please contact us.

Group Classes

We offer group classes for children ages 5 and up, teens, adults, and seniors. Students learn footwork and blade-work along with the rules of modern competitive fencing. Our instructor teaches all three fencing weapons: Foil, Epee, and Saber to students of all experience levels.

Our complete class and training schedule is available on our Calendar page.

Private Instruction

Private lessons are also available in all three weapons. Lessons range from thirty minutes to one hour depending on the student's wishes and instructor availability. Semiprivate (small group) lessons for siblings, friends, couples, or parent/child combinations can be arranged.

Seminars

We offer two-hour "Introduction to Fencing" seminars on weekends throughout the year. These single day courses take students of all ages quickly through the basics of foil fencing from learning to stand on guard through attacks, defense, and on to fencing their first foil bout.

No equipment or experience necessary! Wear sneakers, a t-shirt and long pants that allow full range of movement (i.e., not tight jeans).

Summer Camps

At our fencing camps, students have an action packed week learning the skills of competitive fencing while making new friends. We offer week-long camps for children ages 8 - 14. It's fun, fast, and exciting! We play fencing games that incorporate learned fencing movements and other important skills. Students learn equipment care, fencing rules, and simple mental training techniques. While the primary weapon is foil, campers will also get a chance to try epee and saber.

Birthday Parties

At our birthday parties, participants learn the basics of fencing and have a great time bouting with each other. Parties are generally 2 hours long, with an hour and a half of fencing fun and a half-hour to enjoy whatever refreshments the hosts choose to provide.

Corporate Outings

Bringing your staff to the Iowa City Fencing Center is a fun way to reward a job well done, or to have a great team-building experience. Similar to our Introduction to Fencing seminars, the program takes participants through the basics of foil fencing from learning to stand on guard through attacks, defense, and on to fencing their first bouts.
